JVA stands for Justizvollzugsanstalt – the official word for a prison in Germany.
JVAs can be found throughout Germany, although some are specialised in the type of prisoner. An interesting example of this is in Singen, where there is a prison for older members of the community.

DNS stands for two different things:
Domain Name System – not exactly German, but the abbreviation is used all the same. The Domain Name System is effectively the address book of the internet. It is the system that converts addresses such as www.germanwordsexplained.com into their equivalent IP addresses, eg. 81.169.145.66
Desoxyribonukleinsäure – known in English as DNA. The English abbreviation is now more commonly used in German, especially in texts that have been translated. The older form can often be heard in films that were dubbed in the 1980s or at the beginning of the 1990s.

GEZ stands for Gebühreneinzugszentrale der öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunkanstalten in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland.
The GEZ is responsible for collecting television and radio license fees in Germany. There are specific rules for calculating how many radios and television sets have to be paid for, depending on the type of usage and exact details can be found on the GEZ website.
Even people who do not own a radio (not even a car radio) or television set may be liable to pay if they own a mobile phone or a computer that can access the internet. These are referred to as “Neuartige Rundfunkempfangsgeräte”.
