Visitors from the Oberursel’s twin towns of Rushmoor (UK), Epinay (France) and Lomonosov (Russia) are at the Hessentag this weekend, and this evening I was able to chat to the newly elected Mayor of Rushmoor, Councillor Alex Crawford.
Since he has only been in office for three weeks, it is maybe not surprising that this is Councillor Crawford’s first visit to Oberursel, and so he only had a few first impressions of the town so far.
Over the weekend he will be attending the naming ceremony of the Lomonosov park at the Maasgrund, the inauguration of a new fountain in Oberstedten and the Hessentag parade on Sunday.
He told me that Rushmoor – a borough made up of Farnborough and Aldershot – is going through a similar phase as Oberursel did when the US Army left the town. The British Army may not have left Aldershot, but many of the forces stationed there are currently on tours in the Middle East, meaning that there are less of them contributing to Rushmoor’s local economy.
Interestingly, one of Councillor Crawford’s first acts of office was to start the “Mayor of Rushmoor” blog, where he has been writing on a regular basis ever since. I wonder what he will writing on Monday about his visit to Germany?
