H.M.S. Otus – British naval history on the Baltic coast

If you travel to the Sassnitz on the Eastern coast of the island of Rügen, to visit the chalk cliffs (“Königsstuhl”) for example, then you may be surprised to find signs to “H.M.S. Otus”.

H.M.S.?  As in “Her Majesty’s Ship?”  Well, almost.  Actually it is an Oberon-class submarine that was launched in Scotland in 1962 and served with the Royal Navy until it was decommissioned in 1991.

After decommissioning she was towed to Stralsund on the Baltic coast, before being moored in the harbour at Sassnitz, where she is now a floating museum. [Read more…]

Science on a ship – the MS Wissenschaft on tour

The MS Wissenschaft is a container ship that has been converted into a floating exhibition.  Each year the ship tours the main rivers of Germany, stopping at towns along the route, and this weekend it was Frankfurt’s turn to play host to the 2011 exhibition called “Neue Wege in der Medizin” (new paths in medicine) during the Main leg of the tour.

The exhibition, which is aimed at both children aged 12 and over, and at adults is split into different sections which first explain how the body works before looking at new ideas both in traditional medicine but also in what might be called “personal lifestyle”. [Read more…]

Take a tour of the Schwebebad at the Hessentag

The Schwebebad in the Strackgasse in Oberursel (literally “floating bath”) is open to the public during the Hessentag in Oberursel, but only for tours of the facilities available.

Visitors can take a look at the open floating tanks or pools, of which there are three to choose from.  The Mediterranean, or Classic tank, the space-themed tank and the underwater-theme tank.  Afterwards they are shown the rest room and the water massage room. [Read more…]
