Testing the Chinese all-you-can-eat buffet on Rügen

Last year during my time on Rügen I went in search of Chinese “all-you-can-eat” type buffets and found that although there were a number of Chinese restaurants on the island, the only one that I could find offering a buffet was the “China Garten” in the Dammstraße in Bergen auf Rügen.

But due to lack of time I did not actually go in and try it. So this year, I decided it was time to go and found out just how good the buffet and the restaurant are.

I commented last year on the problem of parking. As it turned out there were plenty of spaces just down the road available, even with a festival going on in the centre of the town, so that was not a problem. [Read more…]

The eagle’s eye view of Rügen from Binz

A new attraction outside Binz on Rügen is hoping to attract visitors and bring them closer to nature during their stay on the island. Outside the town a new nature trail has been built, which features not just an elevated section through the trees but also two towers. The higher of the two goes up as far as 82m above sea level, is shaped like an eagle’s nest and offers spectacular views across the island.

The first tower, however, starts at ground level and takes you up into the trees. From there, an elevated section takes you through the woods to the second tower. On the way there are a number of things to do, all of them optional. There are some alternative routes that contain see-saw type arrangements or wobbly boards to make the walk for children more interesting. And there are sensory tasks, such as listening to bird calls through what look like gramophone horns. [Read more…]

Störtebeker Festspiele 2013 – A new cycle with a new face

The Störtebeker Festspiele start their 2013 season this Saturday, and with the main figure Klaus Störtebeker losing his head at the end of last year’s production, this year sees a new actor – Bastian Semm – take over the role.

Taking on such a major role is surely not an easy task considering that it has only been played by two other actors in the past 20 years that the Festspiele have been going for, especially when one of them (Norbert Braun) is on the stage beside you playing Klaus Störtebeker’s father.  But Bastian is determined to make his mark and play his Klaus Störtebeker whilst keeping the elements that makes the character what it is.

But not just Klaus Störtebeker is being played by someone new, his friend Goedeke Michels also has a new appearance in the shape of Andreas Euler, again a role that the same actor had played for the past 10 years. [Read more…]
