“Jazz meets Mühle” is being held for the third time this year, and slightly earlier in the year as well. The 2014 event takes place on Whitmonday, 9th June and involves as always the mills along the Mühlenwanderweg.
At five places along the route there will be jazz bands playing, with refreshments available and a chance to see the historical buildings from a new perspective.
Although the event itself will be taking place between 11am and 5.30pm, the bands are playing at different times along the route, allowing visitors to experience each one in turn.
The five locations are:
Schuckardtsmühle
Now known as “Haus der Naturfreunde”, or Altkönigstraße nr. 53, The Beatstand and Valentin Garvie will be demonstrating the jazz trumpet at its best at 11am with the “Verein der Naturfreunde” providing the refreshments. A water-wheel still works here, but is not the original wheel and is only for demonstration purposes. At 2.pm Rosalie Schüler and Henrik Engström from Friedrichsdorf’s music school will be playing.
Kürtellsmühle
This building is now better known as the home of the “Adam Koch” plumbing company at Altkönigstraße nr. 43, however Adam Koch himself used to be mill builder. The jazz “for all senses” will be performed by Regina Klein & Band at 12pm and Müller’s Partyservice will be providing the freshments.
Herrenmühle
The building, An der Herrenmühle 7-9, is one that many people have walked passed without knowing much about its history, as it is next to the Bleiche car park. A large water wheel is still visible from the Hollerberg path. A trio known as “Coeur du Bois” will be playing gipsy-style jazz starting at 1pm, with refreshments from Pizzeria Pepperoni.
Vortaunusmuseum
The museum is located at the top end of the market square and contains examples of millstones and other interesting pieces of technology from the mills’ hayday. The Powerhouse-Swingtett will be playing swing, as the name suggests, from 2pm onwards, with refreshments being arranged by the neighbouring Ratskeller restaurant.
Hospitalkirche
A new addition this year is the courtyard next to the Hospitalkirche, whe the band “Crotchets” – the Klezmerensemble of Oberursel’s music school – will be playing at 11.30am followed by John Defferary’s Uptown Swingtide at 3pm offering music from New Orleans to Count Basie. The refreshments are here are being offered by the charity raising money to complete the victims’ memorial.
