The Maize Maze in Weißkirchen

Last Saturday (19th July, 2014) saw the official opening of the Maize Maze between Weißkirchen and Steinbach for the new summer season.  Fountain Queen Carolyn II. officially declared the maze open with its owner Richard Bickert, before going into the maze herself with her Brunnenmeister Harry.

The maze has a different theme this year, and this year it has taken on the shape of the South American continent – complete with the Falkand Islands.   For adults there are questions to answer about the countries there and the answers are hidden in the maze, such as “how many spears does the Bolivian coat of arms have”  Children have a different set of tasks which involves looking for photos of animals.

Each answer or animal adds a letter to make up a word, and if that word is complete by the time you exit the maze then you can enter the prize draw which will be drawn when the maze closes in October.

The maize for the maze was sown at the beginning of May, and the work to prepare the maze took place when it was around 10cm high.  But it is not just the maze that attracts the visitors, the barn next door has food and drink on offer as well as rides of children round the farm behind a tractor, animals to stroke and even a small beach with deck chairs, a paddling pool and a fantastic view of the Frankfurt skyline.

On some days there are other events on offer, such as classic tractors visiting or a day about the herbs that go into the local green sauce.

The maize maze is open Saturdays from 2pm until 7pm and Sundays from 11am until 7pm until 5th October, 2014.
