Cyclist caused accident crossing road

A 52-year-old cyclist decided to cross the Nassauer Straße by pushing his bicycle last Saturday lunchtime (7th September, 2013).

Unfortunately, according to police he did not consider the traffic on the road, causing drivers to drive and swerve to avoid him.  This resulted in two cars colliding with each other.

The cyclist continued on his way regardless, however someone from one of the cars involved was able to catch up with him and keep him at the scene until the police arrived.

No-one was injured but the damage is estimated at around €3,800.

Collision between car and U-Bahn

Last Wednesday (21st August, 2013) there was a collision between a car and a U-Bahn at the level crossing on the corner of the Nassauer Straße and Berliner Straße.

According to police the 81-year-old driver of a Mercedes ignored a red traffic light and drove onto the crossing.  The driver of the U-Bahn made an emergency stop, but the train still hit the car on the crossing although no-one was injured.

The fire brigade were called to clear the debris from the crossing, but trains were running again a short time later.

The damage is estimated at around €50,000.

The second Bahnhofsfest – and the less than grand opening

This time last year Oberursel was celebrating the grand re-opening of the station building after the restoration work had been completed.

So when I heard that the Bahnhofsfest (“station festival”) was being held again this year – albeit at short notice – I was looking forward to it.  All of a sudden, everywhere I looked there were flyers and posters advertising it, and details were published in the local newspapers.

Whilst I was certainly looking forward to seeing Roy Hammer & Die Pralinées play in the evening, from a news point of view the highlight could well have been the opening of the new Ärztehaus opposite the station – a building containing a number of doctors’ surgeries, a chemist and a bank.

Except that when I went to the opening at 11am, I, along with other members of the press and the public were politely told that the opening was by invitation only, and myself and two other photographers were definitely not on the list of people being allowed in.

Eventually we found out that a public opening was taking place on the stage at the station at 11.30am. [Read more…]

Music, English and Doctors – the 2nd Station Festival is this weekend

This weekend (18th/19th May, 2013) will see not only the station festival take place in Oberursel for the second time, but also the official opening of the new building on the opposite side of the road which houses a number of doctors’ surgeries.

The festival starts on both days  at 11am and on Saturday night “Roy Hammer and the Pralinées” will be performing at 8pm, open-air and with free entry!

There will be a merry-go-round, bouncy castle, miniature steam train and tours of the new building on offer.

Helen Doron Early English, who are located in the station building, will be singing and dancing on stage in English at 2pm on both days, 4.30pm on Saturday and 5pm on Sunday.  They will also be telling the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar on Saturday at 2.30pm and The Gruffalo on Sunday at 3.30pm.

Drivers should note that the Nassauer Straße will be closed from Saturday 6am until Sunday 7pm between the Feldbergstraße and the Kleine Adenauerallee.

How Oberursel is planning to re-develop the station area with the help of its citizens

The discussion taking place in Oberursel about the re-development of the station area is not new.  In fact, it has been going on for several decades as Mayor Hans-Georg Brum reminded local residents at a meeting in the Stadthalle this week.  He had even brought along a copy of the 1976 traffic concept to prove it!

But whilst some members of the town council may still be reminding people of how expensive the plan was to put a tunnel under the Nassauer Straße and join the road coming from Bad Homburg with the Weingärten by-pass, others – indeed a group of ordinary people from the town – had brought along suggestions of their own.
